Marked
by this memorial staff and a few foundations, the
Whitman Mission story is one of America. A young
girl's dream of Oregon; faith amid hardship
and loss, and the difficulty of cultural exchange which
ultimately lead to the tragic massacre at the
Mission. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman set out
for Oregon in 1836, Narcissa being the first of two
women on the Oregon Trail, and spent the next 11 years
ministering to the Cayuse and Oregon Trail pioneers
before their death in 1847.
